Minions banana song. 2. If file is multipart don't forget to check all parts before downloading!.
I've been doing some thinking recently. Laser League is literally dead on Xbox, even though it just released. I really like the game, so I'm pretty sad about it. I think Laser League just requires so many layers of skill that it turns people off. Gamers don't really like skill-based games nowadays, and it's been forever (I'm talking early Halo 3 days) since skill-based games were loved. If you're longing for the nostalgic days of 2000's skill-based gaming, Laser League may satisfy that itch. But if you're a new-age gamer who enjoys stuff like Battlefront, Destiny, or Fortnite, it may be a huge turn-off.
R/thisislaserleague: This sub is for Laser League, a futuristic sports video game by Roll7, the creators of OlliOlli. Laser League is a deceptively simple competitive game. The controls are incredibly straightforward, but that is offset by the sheer amount of.
Here's why I think that is.Laser League's layers of skill are:1) Movement: this game seems to have a tough movement system. Most players I watch, even 'good' ones, don't really get the whole wall-wrapping thing, and they struggle to use it to their advantage. When a teammate goes down literally inches from them on the other side of the wall, they will spend 30-45 seconds trying to weave their way across the entire pitch just to get to them, when they could have just walked through the wall and got the revive in under a second. Keep in mind that movement systems haven't been part of skill curves since Gears 3, almost a decade ago.
Ghost Recon: Future Soldier (2012) had the steepest skill curve of any game I've played, due to its deep movement and cover system, but people pushed back against it so hard that after its release, cover systems weren't an acceptable thing anymore. Instead of the skill-gap being focused on movement, cover, reactions, and plays, players wanted it to be focused on team-shooting and 'tactics', whatever that meant. People just aren't used to having to think that much about their movement, and that turns them off to the game.2) Acting Individually as it Relates to the Team: everyone should be doing something advantageous for the team, on their own. You have to think by yourself, and act by yourself, but do so in a way that helps your team win.
Way too many players will follow teammates around while they activate nodes or whatever. This sort of individual positioning skill hasn't been a factor in skill curves in the last decade either. Most competitive games nowadays only require hand-holding and team-shooting to win. People aren't used to having to act on their own, and that turns them off to the game.3) Twitch Reactions AND Prolonged Combat: this game has a unique focus on one-on-one combat combined with twitch reactions and accuracy that hasn't been seen since the early Halo days. You might be playing Snipe and have a Blade target you, and you're working the angles, weaving in and out of lasers, executing wall-wrap snipes to try to keep the Blade off of you and away from his downed teammates, etc. There's a lot going on, and it requires sustained focus from the player, which hasn't been a factor in skill curves in about a decade. This turns people off as well.TL;DR: This is a layered skill-based game.
Gamers are used to picking one or two games that use the 'skills' they're good at, like maybe team-shooting, hero selection, or team positioning, and sticking with those games, never exercising their other skills. Unfortunately, I fear that most players that pick up this game will put it down after one or two matches because they just don't 'get' it. They haven't been asked to actually focus and use a large selection of skills simultaneously in literally 10+ years.
I like the game a lot, but I don't think its lack of popularity is due to 'too many layers of skill'. How does a game like Overwatch have less layers of skill? To be honest, I think this game is quite easy to pick up compared to most popular games I've played.I really think it must come down to marketing, but that's sort of a copout. I'm sure lots of games have become popular with less marketing.Im a teacher, so I see people playing that super popular Tron/slither type game on their computers all the time. I think it's called Powerline. How is Laser League not just a way more fun version of that game? One thing that'd at least help a little with popularity is allowing local players to play online together. I would love to know what kind of player base you expected, I wouldn't consider the game dead at all I have longer queue times for Overwatch.
Why do you say that it is dead? Also I don't think the 'layered skill based' nature of the game is what would turn most people. It has an isometric camera and nontraditional combat, and on top of that it requires patience and strategy for sure. But you're acting like it's this next level ultimate competitive experience. You generalize a lot about 'gamers today' but literally everything you talked about can be found in other games, and one game is a huge counter example to everything you've said; Rocket League. A competitive game where you are asked to learn a whole unique set of skills unique to this game (way more than laser league). Everyone is terrible at rocket league when they first play it, and the skills you need to pick up to become a good player take hours and hours of practice (I'm talking aerials, half flips, ball carrying on your hood, flicks, air dribbles, ceiling shots, you name it) but it seems people don't give up after just a few games.'
There's a lot going on, and it requires sustained focus from the player, which hasn't been a factor in skill curves in about a decade. This turns people off as well.' Other games don't require sustained focus?
When you're timing an icewall to save your teammates from DVA's ult in Overwatch, while trying to dodge the widow sitting in the back all the while trying to not get booped into a hole by lucio that doesnt require sustained focus? Clutching in rainbow six siege or sitting back defending the hostage? When you have a 6 minute overtime in rocket league where one miss could lead to a goal and then losing the game? Do you play any games? I sort of get what you mean about the game not having downtime during play, but that's really not a big deal because the rounds themselves are usually short and the whole match isn't that long either (and does have natural breaks.) Rocket league on the other hand requires you focus the entire time, except for goals and kickoffs there is no down time. Maybe in casual you can get away without applying 'sustained focus' but not in ranked. If you want twitch reactions but also prolonged combat, look no further than Overwatch or all MOBAs. By players not being used to thinking about their movement, I think you mean positioning because you mostly talked about people not understanding wall warping, which I agree is somewhat of a problem, but then you say'Keep in mind that movement systems haven't been part of skill curves since Gears 3, almost a decade ago.'
Um citation needed please bro? What about the movement system in Titanfall or Black ops 3?
What about rocket league? What about lucio or tracer or pharah from overwatch? The movement is not overly hard in laser league. Compared to isometric bullet hell/ shoot em ups I've played (furi, enter the gungeon, ruiner all of which have a similar camera) the movement is actually very simplistic and easy to learn. After a few hours of play I found myself wall warping a few times without really thinking about it.The biggest things actually holding the game back? No marketing, and the fact that certain people don't really give indie games like that much of a look (sad but true) seems like you have insane nostalgia for a certain era of xbox games specifically (as I noticed you didn't mention any pc games) and there is nothing wrong with that, but this has nothing to do with laser league or what's holding it back, which is a false premise anyway because for what it is the game is doing fine.
Also you said below that laser league is 'solely based on individual skill' yet you say many people go blade no matter what the other team goes. This implies that you recognize match ups are important, or that it would be possible to go into a game with a disadvantage because of what your teammate or what someone on the other team picks. This is team based, this is the same thing that happens in Overwatch, Rainbow six, or any class based game out there you could name. I don't think it's skill based at all. Later when you're trying to rank up your preferred class, sure, but tge base play? You're right in that there are some things people need to learn to do, but I wouldn't say they tie into pure skill so much as experience and learning to play as you have to do with any game skilled/unskilled.
When you're up against a good team you definitely want players who know their roles, but I'd still stick with low level/weak players so they can see how I manage the wall passes and how I play my class - didn't take much time for me to get used to it and I'm usually a slow learner outside of fps games.
